Out with the Old, In with the New

At the end of 2013, I celebrated the holidays very low-key. I worked with clients organizing in Boulder and Metro Denver, I spent time with family, and… I tore through every room and closet in my house like my hair was on fire, literally staying up until 1:30 a.m. several nights because I was so obsessed. Is my house cluttered? NO. Was there stuff here that I don’t need, use or love that I could live without? YES. So, why bother? I know most of you would rather spend your time doing anything else. So… this post, I talk about what “Out with the old, in with the new” can do for you. Let’s motivate to create a fresh, clutter free start!

If you know me, you know I don’t like having stuff around that I don’t need, use or love. So I turned the tables on myself. I ended up making four trips to Goodwill. If I’m to serve you the best way I can, and truly understand the challenges you face in deciding to let go of things, I need to walk my talk. Why bother when I had room for everything? It’s about the energy of clutter.

Years ago, I had the privilege of hearing the internationally renowned Feng Shui master and author Karen Kingston (“Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui”) speak at an organizer’s conference. She described clutter as STUCK ENERGY, and how clutter itself is often icky, sticky, dusty, dirty. She proclaimed organizers as the most “intrepid” people she knows for our willingness to deal with the lowest form of energy in our spaces. She said cluttered basements are the worst, as the basement is your foundation.

2013 was a year from hell for me. My dad had a medical crisis. It was an 8 month ordeal. I was depressed, stressed, my business took a beating, and I had almost no personal life. Dad is a walking miracle and has been home since October 2013, doing great at age 84. We’re closer than ever. Facing 2014, I was really feeling the need for change and to put 2013 far, far behind me. Although I know the changes I desire start from within… that’s when I get the urge to clean out stuff I WON’T MISS. That may sound strange to you, but when you de-clutter, you are energetically creating space for NEW THINGS, OPPORTUNITIES AND PEOPLE to come into your life, space for CHANGE TO HAPPEN. As Karen Kingston says, you are getting rid of the stuck energy in your house. By getting yourself unstuck on the outside, you help yourself get unstuck on the inside. I know that in my bones, which is why I periodically go on a decluttering rampage!

I got such a lift from clearing out old stuff. Organizing your space will help you feel like you’re ready for anything. It brings peace of mind. Let go of things from the past that have been dragging you down, and step boldly into the future like I’m doing. OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW!
